The Stump Grinding Process

We use a walk-behind or self-propelled stump grinder depending on stump size and access. Before we start, we check for underground utilities — call 811 is standard practice on all stump jobs. Most residential stumps in Lancaster, Lititz, and Manheim take 20–45 minutes per stump. A big old oak or silver maple stump might run an hour or more depending on root spread.

We cut the stump to as close to ground level as possible with a chainsaw before grinding — this saves grinder time and extends blade life. Grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface, which is enough depth to cover cleanly, grow grass over, or plant shrubs. After Stump Grinding: What to Expect

The hole left behind fills in over 6–12 months as chips decompose and the soil settles. If you want to reseed quickly, rake out the majority of chips, add topsoil, and seed. For planting shrubs or perennials, let the area settle and decompose for a full season first if possible — fresh chips are nitrogen-depleting and will compete with new plantings.

Surface roots not captured by grinding will decompose on their own over a few years. They won't sprout once the stump is ground below the root flare.

If you have three or more stumps, the per-stump price drops. Moving equipment to the site is a fixed cost — additional stumps on the same property cost much less than the first.
